Half Mistake

It shouldn’t have happened again. The real demon is long gone by now, millions of miles away across space and perhaps even time. Shit. What an incredible fuck-up.

There’s no point saying it was Shiva’s fault. That she tricked me. The destroyer of worlds is also, quite fitting, the destroyer of hearts. I know it now and I knew it then, but it makes no difference. Never does with her. Now a human is dead instead of a demon. That makes all the difference in the universe. Not that it was an innocent human but that I couldn’t tell one from the other.

Trying to get back at Shiva for what she has done is almost in every attempt a futile effort. In a sense, she always wins since she encompasses both creation and destruction. The only possible way of hurting her is to make her feel the opposite of what she’s set to achieve. That almost falls into the realm of impossibility if you think of the level of planning such an endeavor would require (no less than perfect reasoning and a century, or two, of meticulous planning). And it has to be all done in your head, no records of any kind. I may have the time but I’m not sure I have the patience. It’s just easier to track down the runaway demon and correct half of my mistake. The other half, if we’re being honest, was actually less a mistake than an early sentence. Simply put, he had it coming. I’m not just telling it to myself so I can feel his death was justified, but Paramjeet Gupta was only a nominal human. He was willingly working with the demon and he would as probably end up turning into one with no help from me. Plus he was a lawyer. So, a very debatable loss. That’s what he got for coming to think tradition was nothing more than a foolish thing embellished by the ignorance of generations past, a mindset that made him outgrow the teachings of his elders and led him to stop worshiping Shiva. You simply have to be careful about getting on the wrong side of certain deities.

Oh, and… Shiva, I know you may well be aware of this account of the events, since I’m giving it substance in the form of writing, so I just want to tell you I very much enjoyed our time together. I may have inadvertently created a demon ahead of time, by sending another corrupted soul to its damnation, but I also destroyed a minion, by disposing of a piece of garbage that was posing as a human being. The scale is balanced, as it should, and as much as you used me I used you.
